How did ED affect you?

Doug: Uh, I think when I first noticed something was wrong, I, um, was a little bit embarrassed by it. I, um, I just thought like, “Maybe it’s a problem that’s gonna go away.” I don’t even think I was initially conscious of it. Um, and, you know, things got a little bit worse and worse over time.

Dave: At first I, uh — I just felt like I was — something had changed, that I was going to be, you know, fifty-five years old, and the switch just turned off, and there’s not going to be that part of enjoyment in my life anymore.

DK: It was difficult to accept for myself, let alone admit to someone else, my wife. Um, eventually I had to. She wanted to know if maybe I was not interested in her, maybe was I seeing someone else, what — what was the problem? And, uh, I just had to take a breath and tell her I — and I told her that way, “I think I have ED.” I couldn’t even bring myself to say, uh, “erection dysfunction,” uh, “erectile dysfunction.” I — I couldn’t bring myself to say it.

What did you think was causing your ED?

Doug: Um, I thought maybe it was just, uh, stress from work, being tired, uh, kids wearing me out, uh, just get older, any number of things, uh, kind of just initially blamed it on. Um, kind of the environmental factors.

Randall: I thought maybe, you know, it was, it was my age, you know. I was getting up there [CHUCKLES] in, uh, in years.

DK: Uh, I thought it might have been due to high blood pressure. Uh, I thought it might be diet. I thought it might be weight. I thought it might be the fact that I had — I — I worked a lot.

Dave: Without knowing, and without having the doctor sit with you and give you the confidence of what really is happening, uh, you — you have all kinds — at least I have all kinds of crazy ideas.

How long did you wait before asking your doctor?

Doug: So I was, uh, I would say I was experiencing problems for close to a year before I went to a doctor to seek treatment.

Howard: I waited a while, um, ’cause I kept thinking it was gonna get better. Um, and I remember going through that period for, for some time. And then sometimes it wouldn’t be as bad so that’s why I kept thinking well, you know, this time actually it kind of worked or, you know… It, it just… So I was never sure.

Dave: I think I didn’t talk to my doctor immediately, uh, when I first started to experience, uh, uh, a change, uh — first of all, it was – it was an embarrassment function, uh, that this can’t be really happening to me — the uncertainty on how I’d be, uh, received by the doctor, um, I — I really didn’t know if you had to go to a special doctor to — you know, to learn about it or not.

DK: If I had to do it all over again, would I wait as long as I did? No way. I — I would have gone right away. I — I would have made a special appointment just for that rather than — than waiting for my yearly appointment.

How did you ask your doctor?

DK: So I’d seen the commercials, and I said, “Hey, Doc — have you heard about this VIAGRA? If I wanted to try it — if I wanted to, you know, see how it worked for me, what — what would I have to do?”

Randall: When I initially went to see the doctor, um, you know, I was a bit embarrassed about it. Um, and I didn’t — really didn’t know what to, to, uh, say, you know, to kind of enter into a conversation about, uh, what I thought I needed. But, um, I think I said something like, uh, “You know, I’d like to get more, uh, intimacy back, uh, into the relationship with my girlfriend, ’cause that’s been lacking as of late.”

Doug: I had made myself some notes before I went to the doctor’s office to say, “You know, I want to talk to him about this, this, and this.” Uh, I remember going into the doctor’s office and putting my notes down. And he was doing a physical exam, and he happened to notice what I had written down, and he said, “I see you wrote VIAGRA down there. Did you want to talk to me about that?” So, um, that was — it was kind of, uh, I guess he was signaling to me it was fine to bring this up during the course of the physical.

How did your doctor react?

Howard: My doctor was very comfortable. Um, I… it did, I think that surprised me to some degree that he just seemed to very, um — and he, he explained that this was a common thing, that VIAGRA seems to help most people. And, um, he had no problem at all writing me a prescription.

Doug: So, the process of him diagnosing me and getting a prescription for ED was pretty much, uh, just a physical to make sure I had no other, uh, medical problems, or issues. I hadn’t had any in the past. I didn’t have any at that time. So, it was pretty straight-forward, and he said, “ I think this’ll help you.” Uh, gave me a prescription, got it filled, and it did in fact help.

Randall: She knew my health history, and, um, she said, you know, because I’m healthy, uh, it shouldn’t be a problem at all and it shouldn’t be anything that I, you know, that I worry about. Um, and she said it’s a fairly, you know, common, uh, thing for, for a guy my age.

DK: He was, uh, matter-of-fact. There was no — no — no judgment or no, you know, uh, [GASPS] “Really? You have what? Oh.” There was none of that. It was — it was very, very gentle, very — a lot easier than I thought.

How did you feel after the discussion?

Howard: I felt, I felt like I should have done it probably a lot earlier had I known it was gonna be as simple as it was.

Dave: I kinda wanted to run out in the parking lot and throw my arms up in the air. Um, and – and – and I’m not going to do that, but that’s what I felt like. Uh, I felt – uh, I – I felt that I had a problem, it was recognized, and we had a treatment moving forward.

Doug: Yeah, I would say after I spoke to my doctor, um, I felt, yeah, an immediate sense of relief ‘cause, you know, the topic has been brought up, now we’re, we’re now – you know, it’s on the table. Um, it was clear it really wasn’t an issue for him at all. : [LAUGHS] Yes, I could kick myself now for waiting that long.

Randall: Yeah, I mean, it was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I, you know, I was surprised in how quickly, um, I felt, you know, different in a, in a positive way.

DK: Relief to have the conversation? To say the least. Once the conversation was had, then – then I could open up and ask questions about it. Once the initial subject was brought up and his response, and there was no judgment, no – no ridicule, no laughter, no put-down, no more shame, it was, uh – it’s – it’s common.

What is the safety of VIAGRA?

Lamm: These men have all had the VIAGRA talk with their doctors. Now it’s your turn.

It’s important to know that VIAGRA is not for everyone. Do not take VIAGRA if you take nitrates—often prescribed for chest pain—as this may cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure. Ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for sex. Common side effects include headache, flushing, upset stomach, and abnormal vision. Stop taking VIAGRA and call your doctor right away if you experience a sudden decrease or loss in vision or hearing. In the rare event of an erection lasting more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical help to avoid long-term injury. Remember, VIAGRA does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

VIAGRA is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).

Important safety information

Do not take VIAGRA if you take nitrates, often prescribed for chest pain, as this may cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure.

Discuss your general health status with your doctor to ensure that you are healthy enough to engage in sexual activity. If you experience chest pain, nausea, or any other discomforts during sex, seek immediate medical help.

In the rare event of an erection lasting more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical help to avoid long-term injury.

If you are older than age 65, or have serious liver or kidney problems, your doctor may start you at the lowest dose (25 mg) of VIAGRA. If you are taking protease inhibitors, such as for the treatment of HIV, your doctor may recommend a 25-mg dose and may limit you to a maximum single dose of 25 mg of VIAGRA in a 48-hour period.

In rare instances, men taking PDE5 inhibitors (oral erectile dysfunction medicines, including VIAGRA) reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to these medicines or to other factors. If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking PDE5 inhibitors, including VIAGRA, and call a doctor right away.

Sudden decrease or loss of hearing has been rarely reported in people taking PDE5 inhibitors, including VIAGRA. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to the PDE5 inhibitors or to other factors. If you experience sudden decrease or loss of hearing, stop taking VIAGRA and contact a doctor right away.

If you have prostate problems or high blood pressure for which you take medicines called alpha blockers, your doctor may start you on a lower dose of VIAGRA.

VIAGRA should not be used with other treatments that cause erections. VIAGRA should not be used with REVATIO as REVATIO contains sildenafil, the same medicine found in VIAGRA.

VIAGRA does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

The most common side effects of VIAGRA are headache, facial flushing, and upset stomach. Less commonly, bluish vision, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light may briefly occur.
